Impossible Love

It seems like our society is so quick to throw around the word “Love” these days.  I love my friends, I love to surf, I love pie, I love, I love, I love.  I think that this sometimes gives us a wrong perspective of love, making it less than what it was created by God to be.  This is especially true in marriage and with Jesus.  Rectifying this is paramount because if God IS love (1 John 4:8), then without a right perspective of Love, we can never hope to have a right perspective of God.  Often the problem with our perspective of Love is that we fail to give it the weight it deserves.
Love is no small thing.  I am to love my wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). This is a radical statement!  Christ died for the church!  So often the command for wives to submit to their husbands causes tension and controversy among christians and non christians alike.  We often forget though that the husband is called to lay down his life for his wife.  This is a completely self sacrificial love in which the man is called to die to himself daily for the sake of serving his wife! What woman wouldn’t want to submit to that?  Men we have failed in our responsibility to love!
The only reason that there is controversy when it comes to the submission of the wife to the husband is because as men we have made it a burden to do so instead of a joy!
The only way that we will ever be capable of loving our wives in this manner is through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.  As radical as this love is, the quality of my love for Jesus should make the quality of love I have for my wife look like hatred by comparison (Luke 14:26).  It is at this point that the hopelessness of our circumstances should begin to become apparent.  It is already impossible for me to drum up from within myself the type of love that I am supposed to have for my wife, and now Jesus says that my love for Him should make that look like hatred by comparison? We need to be clear that this in no way decreases the quality of my love for Nicole. It does however call attention to the impossible quality of Love that we are called to have for Christ. A love of this magnitude is only made possible by the indwelling and the constant refilling of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit is central to the way we love.  The amazing thing about the Holy Spirit is that although He is an equal member of the Trinity, just as much God as the Father and the Son are, He never draws attention to Himself.  He always points to Jesus!  So what it boils down to is this: I need more of the Spirit so that I can love Jesus as intensely as I should, and it is only through Jesus that I can love my wife in the way the Lord has called me to.  The end result of this will be a better understanding of the Father through the revelation of His Son by the Spirit through Love.
